Dutch Payslip Explained: Why Net Pay Differs from the Calculator

Read common Dutch payslip lines in plain English and see which items our 2026 calculator includes, excludes, or treats differently.

Quick answer: a Dutch payslip (loonstrook) usually shows gross base pay, payroll tax (loonheffing), often a holiday-allowance reserve, and employer-specific deductions. Our calculator estimates payroll tax under clear assumptions. Pension, lunch schemes, lease cars, and unpaid leave are common reasons your payslip is lower.

Base gross: €5,787 / month + holiday pay in May

What the calculator models

For a normal month, the shared engine estimates:

  • gross monthly base salary;
  • payroll tax with or without tax credit;
  • optional 30% ruling reimbursement in payroll; and
  • holiday allowance accrued and paid with the special remuneration rate (often in May).

See the full conversion walkthrough on gross to net Netherlands and the holiday math on holiday allowance tax.

What the calculator does not know

Your payslip can be lower or higher because of:

  • pension contributions;
  • a company-car addition (bijtelling);
  • employer lunch, transport, or bike schemes;
  • unpaid leave or mid-month start/end dates;
  • overtime, bonus, or commission;
  • a second job where tax credit is already used elsewhere; or
  • corrections from a previous period.

If the signed offer and the payslip disagree on whether 8% holiday allowance is included, decode the package first: Dutch job offer salary explained.

Normal month vs holiday month

In most months you see base pay minus withholding (and any recurring deductions). In the holiday-payout month, gross and net usually jump when accrued vakantiegeld is paid.

Compare:

  1. Calculator normal month net ↔ a non-May payslip.
  2. Calculator holiday payout estimate ↔ the May/June line for vakantiegeld.

Do not average a holiday month across the year when you are checking a single payslip.

How to reconcile in five minutes

  1. Confirm period hours and base gross on the payslip.
  2. Enter the same base (or annual package definition) in the calculator.
  3. Match tax-credit and 30% ruling toggles to what payroll actually applies.
  4. List every payslip deduction the calculator excludes.
  5. If timing of a move is involved, remember the first month can be pro-rated — see salary and cash buffer to move.

Official sources

This is a planning explanation. Your payslip, annual statement (jaaropgave), and tax assessment remain the final documents for your situation.
